34. Time Travellers Wife Niffenegger

What a book to start of my challenge.

I will happily admit that I am a bit of a sucker for romance, as my Hugh Grant DVD collection will attest, and "The Time Traveler's Wife" is very simply a beautiful love story. I am always a fan of authors who use two different voices to tell the same story, and Niffenegger uses this well in order to tell the story of the two main characters and their rather bizarre relationship.

Don't get me wrong, while I loved it, there were many points in the story where you have to stretch your imagination. The whole premise of someone who can time-travel is not something I will ever fully appreciate, but the use of the time-travel as a means to explain the love story worked very well. It to me is a much clever way than using the old cliche of fate to bring the main protagonists together.

I have to admit that I did struggle a little with about 50 pages to go to keep on reading... not because I was bored or finding it hard going, but simply because it was too sad to keep reading! Ultimately though the ending managed to avoid the crappy Hollywood sentiments that often let down stories like this one (Despite the presence of Rachel McAdams I have absolutely no desire to see how Hollywood has actually managed to ruin this movie), and landed very much on the right side of not being too soppy.

Quite simply this book is beautiful in its originality, and is one that I would highly recommend.
