20. Confessions of a Justified Sinner Hogg

I picked up this book a month ago with the belief that because it was only 170 pages long I would finish it fairly quickly... How wrong was I?!!? After four weeks of madness at work the last thing I wanted to do was to read... or at the very least read this book!

Confessions was a very long and hard slog.

Books being written in the vernacular usually annoys me quite a lot, but Hogg has managed to not annoy me with this - perhaps because unlike some he actually gets it right, and at times it actually aids the story.

My biggest complaint is that it it is written without consideration for someone like me who has a short attention span! No chapters, no obvious stopping points. The stream of consciousness that Hogg presents us with is tough going - unless you happen to be on a half-term holiday!

The story itself is not bad, and makes a lot more sense when you read it with the introduction (which I, stupidly, took the advice given to read it after the story). The three separate sections of the book are an intriguing way to spell out the story, but to be really honest with you I just didn't get them until I read the introductory notes, and to me that is a failing with this book.

By all means read it if you have to, but most definitely read the introduction first.
